The thyroid, a small gland in your neck, works like a thermostat to regulate your metabolism. When it's operating normally, your body's functions hum along at a comfortable level. However, if it's cranked up too high (hyperthyroidism) or turned down too low (hypothyroidism), the whole body revs up or slows down, often with serious consequences.
